FREE CLINICS FOR KIDS: Wilmington Parks & Recreation offers basketball clinics for kids at the MLK Center (401 South 8th Street). SOUTHPORT SOIREE: Detailed plans for renovation of Southport’s former City Hall will be unveiled by Up Your Arts in a series of presentations on Sept. 20. As part of its Save the Hall, Y’all campaign, the local non-profit organization is hosting a fundraiser to introduce the public to the building’s past, present, and potential future as a performing arts and community center. Tickets ($25) are on sale for the event, which is designed to look and feel like a night out on the town at the imagined new center. Attendees will participate in a two-block walking tour of four downtown Southport homes, each featuring a unique musical act. SURPLUS PROPERTY FOR SALE: New Hanover County’s Board of Commissioners has declared certain personal property surplus to the County’s operations and has allowed for the sale of these items to the public. Property will be offered for sale through Sept. 30, using GOVDEALS, a company that provides online auction services to government entities. Registration with GOVDEALS is required for bidding. All items are sold “as is,” and the acceptable methods of payment are cash, money order, cashier’s check or credit card. Please review the terms and conditions prior to bidding. NEW EXHIBIT: HeART of the Gardens is a new installation at Airlie Gardens (300 Airlie Road, Wilmington), on display until Oct. 31. Local artists were selected to decorate one of 13 oversized fiberglass hearts, each with their own creative design, which are placed throughout the grounds. Admission fee applies. HOPE, COPE AND FUN: Hope Abounds, a local non-profit that provides assistance to families and patients undergoing cancer treatment, invites families that have a child with cancer to Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park (5320 Oleander Drive, Wilmington) on Sept. 29 from 2-5pm. The event is free, but registration is required. Registration includes unlimited arcade games for one hour, two dry activities, snacks, and drinks. Register online.
