Description:
Fragments of War at the Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington NC shines a light on some of the ways people in the region experienced the nation’s most significant conflict. Visitors can see rarely displayed artifacts, including a commission signed by President Abraham Lincoln, local man Colonel Gaston Meares’ hat, a flask presented to an officer of the U.S. Colored Troops who served at Fort Fisher, pieces of fabric that came through the Union blockade of the port of Wilmington, and a secession cockade made by a local woman who supported North Carolina’s secession from the United States. The exhibit combines the stories of wartime symbols with the more intimate histories of some local men who served in the Confederate military, and uses period images from magazines like Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper to add color and atmosphere.
