Description:

Bellamy Mansion Museum in downtown Wilmington, NC, presents Driving Without Privilege: The Negro Motorist Green Book, a lecture by historian Lettie Shumate. A guidebook for African American travelers from 1936 to 1966, The Green Book provided a list of restaurants, hotels, and more, that welcomed African American patrons during a time of segregation. This lecture examines some of book's locations, including those in Wilmington, the book's impact on African Americans, automobility in the Jim Crow era, and how driving without privilege has evolved today.
