Art Exhibit: Hoss Haley's Drawing Machine
February 24, 2012 to March 30, 2012
UNCW Cultural Arts Building
601 S. College Rd
Wilmington, NC 28403
Hoss Haley's Drawing Machine in UNCW's Cultural Arts Building, Room 2033, features a large metal table with a robotic arm-like apparatus that generates drawings, as well as several completed drawings. The machine is controlled by the numerical sequence of PI. A motor, constantly in rotation, moves a stylus around on a painted steel panel. The stylus scratches through the paint exposing the steel below. There are 5 actuators that control the path of the stylus. In the PI series each of the 5 actuators is assigned two digits, 1 and 2, 3 and 6, 4 and 7, 5 and 8, 9 and 0. Every 5 minutes a new number of the sequence comes up. As each number comes up the corresponding actuator is set into motion. Because PI is an infinite number 3.1415926 etc., the path of the machine is never the same. HOURS: Monday through Friday, Noon to 4.
