Description:
Ordinary Magic: Disposable Camera Photographs by New Hanover County K-12 Students will be on display at the Art Gallery at the Cultural Arts Building on the campus of UNCW. The gallery will be open Monday through Thursday noon to 4pm during the summer.
In the spring of 2012, 100 disposable cameras were distributed to public and private schools throughout New Hanover County. The resulting 2,700 photographs by K-12 students comprise Ordinary Magic consisting of one print from each school and a slide show of all the photographs taken throughout the project. As recently as 15 years ago, K-12 students may not have ever used a digital camera, while most regularly took photographs with point and shoot or disposable film cameras. Today, the opposite is true -- most K-12 students in 2012 have used a digital camera, but perhaps not film. Disposable cameras are notoriously anticlimactic with a flimsy feel and quiet click of the plastic shutter. What’s more, unlike digital, the results are not immediately visible. In fact, the photographs taken for this project will remain a mystery until the opening. The suspense created by analog film photography and the subsequent surprise of seeing all the resulting images is part of the magic of this event. Each student’s suspense is paralleled by all of our surprise at the images this widespread camera distribution will yield. What remains certain is that the results will be an exciting and unexpected view of the county through the eyes of youth.
